A map, not a universal checklist
The Germany relocation pathway
Follow the major decision points in a Germany relocation, from choosing a residence basis to registration and the first settled weeks.
01 — Establish who is moving and why
Begin with each person, not the luggage. Citizenship, employment or study purpose, family relationship and intended length of stay determine which rules deserve attention. An EU employee, a non-EU researcher and an accompanying spouse may share an address while following different formal routes.
Write down the target city, employer or institution, earliest required presence and the date after which delay becomes costly. Those facts form the boundary of the plan.
02 — Check the residence basis at the right authority
EU citizens generally rely on freedom of movement. Many non-EU nationals need to assess a visa or residence title before travel, though nationality and circumstances matter. Use the responsible German mission and official federal information; do not assume another applicant’s experience establishes your route.
This is also the stage to identify qualification recognition, marriage or birth records, apostilles, translations and employer statements that may take weeks to obtain.
03 — Test dates against documents and appointments
Place expiry dates, notice periods, consular timing, work commencement and family travel on one calendar. Keep uncertain authority dates visibly uncertain. Avoid making a non-refundable travel or housing commitment depend on an appointment you do not yet hold.
04 — Choose housing with registration in mind
An attractive short stay is not necessarily a usable registration address. Ask whether the housing provider will issue the landlord confirmation required for Anmeldung and whether every arriving household member can be named appropriately.
Local registration deadlines and appointment arrangements vary by municipality. Check the city you will actually live in rather than relying on guidance written for Berlin, Munich or Frankfurt.
05 — Align health cover and employment evidence
Health insurance timing can intersect with employment, university enrolment and residence evidence. Clarify when coverage begins, what proof will be issued and whether accompanying family members need separate action. Specific insurance selection calls for qualified advice; a relocation plan should at least identify the decision deadline.
06 — Complete the first local sequence
After arrival, address registration often unlocks or supports later steps such as receiving a tax identification number and completing payroll records. Bank access, mobile service, broadcasting contribution correspondence and foreigners authority matters each have their own evidence needs.
Keep copies of submissions and note which office received what. German administrative letters can carry deadlines even when they look routine.
07 — Recheck the plan after the first change
A delayed lease, amended start date or family member arriving later can alter several downstream actions. Update the shared chronology rather than adjusting one isolated line.
