Anmeldung starts with the address, not the appointment

Germany’s address registration is often presented as a first-week appointment. In practice, the decisive step happens earlier: choosing accommodation that supports registration and obtaining the landlord’s confirmation, the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung.

A booking confirmation is not the same document

A hotel or short-stay receipt proves a reservation. It does not automatically establish that the provider will confirm your move into a dwelling for registration purposes. Before paying for temporary accommodation, ask plainly whether Anmeldung is permitted and whether the provider issues the required confirmation.

If the answer is vague, treat it as unresolved. This matters because registration can affect correspondence, tax administration and later residence processes.

The municipality determines the procedure

Registration is local. Appointment systems, accepted booking windows and instructions differ between municipalities. Read the official page for your actual place of residence, not simply the nearest major city.

Prepare the passport or identity document and the landlord confirmation, then check whether your municipality asks for additional forms or civil-status evidence for a family registration. Avoid carrying unnecessary sensitive originals if the official list does not request them.

Build housing risk into the timeline

When permanent housing will not be ready, place an explicit decision point in your plan: either secure temporary accommodation that supports registration or understand which later tasks may need to wait. This is more honest than assigning Anmeldung an arbitrary date while the address remains unknown.
